Lancaster, PA

Had a great ride into Lancaster, PA. Stayed with a friend of my aunt's (Elizabeth Koch) in Mannheim, PA in her 100 year old house. Went over to the monastery to visit with my Aunt Geri (aka, Sister Maria Joseph. Had not seen her in 25 years and the two and 1/2 hours flew by.

Temp was still 89 last night @ 9:30 pm, ugh. Got on the road this am by 6:30 and had a flat right off the bat. Then headed for back country roads to get my mileage (almost EVERYTHING is paved). During my 57 mile morning, I saw the most beautiful scenery of the entire trip across the country.

Many, many Amish farms with the most kept homes and barnyards I have ever laid eyes on. The flowers were unbelievable, and were planted alongside every stone barn, house, and out building. The children were dressed nicely in their hats and braids and were either picking in field, loading up in buggies, or doing various chores. The dairy cows were lovely, with big doe eyes and buck coats. Crops of tobacco, corn, peppers, tomatoes, peaches, apples, and alfalfa were visible on either side of the twisting, hills roads.

Later we got into horse country and the magnitude of the horse farms were overwhelming. I rode for miles just to get around the outskirts of Iron Spring Horse Farm, whose barns peppered the double split-rail fenced pastures.

With my mileage from Lancaster to Chester,PA finished, Gracie and I headed for the cradle of liberty. In all the time I lived in NJ, I had never ventured into Philly. The Old City Hall and the Liberty Bell were fascinating. Did not have tickets to go into Independence Hall, but walked around the historic district and the Seaport Areas.

Exhausted we headed for the nearest Pizza place and campground. We found them both near Camden, NJ. Tomorrow we will head back to the starting point (PA) so I can ride the miles into Jersey. It's what I have been working almost 3 weeks toward. To date I have 1,225 miles, and sadly I do not think I will reach my goal of 1500 miles. I will try to get another 100 miles on before Saturday afternoon.

Donations update and playing catchup

Today's total on the ALZ Stars website is $1970. There is another $175 in cash that will be added, for a total of $2,145! Still trying to meet of exceed my $3000 goal.

Catching up on our trip!

8/6/10

Day 14
Last night while leaving the local Mexican Restaurant, a couple approached us (he was a cyclist) and offered us their house to spend the night. We graciously declined, but I handed him our card in the hopes that he might wish to carry his generosity over to the donation page.

Today was a challenge. Started out strong, leaving from the campsite (Dillon State Park) near Zanesville. Temps cool and roads smooth. Then I hit the mountains. First few hills were fine, but farther down the road it became apparent I will be in the mountains from here on into Jersey. Hit the 1000 miles mark just before Cambridge. Rode into Cambridge (on HWY 40) in Guernsey County, OH where we stopped to admire the courthouse built in 1883 and buy some local produce at the farmer’s market. Abundant supply of locally grown veggies, fruits, homemade pies and breads. Stocked up and headed back out on the road. When HWY 40 merged with I-70, I had to hop in the van for 20 miles of Interstate and crossed over into Wheeling, WV.

After that the riding was sketchy at best. Ride a little here and there and load up when the traffic became heavy. Managed only 58 miles despite repeated efforts, a stop at the Harley store to ask for a better ride route, and twisty, mountainous, one-lane roads. The hills were so steep and long, I was glad to have my granny gear to fall back on. After being yelled at a few times by inpatient drivers, I became frustrated, had a pity party, loaded up and headed for Ryerson Station State Park, (now crossed into PA) where we found the power was out due to a big storm a few days prior, no showers and pit toilets..nasty.

Had a delicious camp dinner of homemade Dilly Ciabatta, celebrity tomatoes, humus, and cheese. Good thing Kevin and Dad put the auxiliary battery in the Sprinter as we are “off the grid” for the night. Some local Bible thumpers on bicycles wheeled over to our site to ask us if we thought we were going to be able to ride in this (Green) county. They warned us of the locals who throw water bottles and trash @ cyclists. Great.

8/7/10 Day 15

Very Frustrating day. Began with a new tire change @ Ryerson Station State Park, PA, where a very helpful Ranger helped us find some bike friendly routes. Rode the first 30 miles relatively stress free in and around the mountains of the West Virginia panhandle. Both the poverty & the stunning views were eye openers. Tried to get back on the original route (HWY 31) but ended up on HWY 30..big difference. Stopped off @ Barnes & Noble to have Grace's Nook reconfigured. By that time it was getting late, we ate some fast food and I rode a bit more until close to 7:30pm. Mountains were a major obstacle. Overall a difficult day emotionally, and we headed for the Budget Hotel(yikes, over $70 for a tiny room)in Summit, PA.

8/8/10 Day 16

Great day! Got on HWY 31 and headed east out of Summit. Beautiful morning, cool & still. Crested two more summits and was able to get in 66 miles. Starting to get better on the long mountain climbs, but now the downhills are proving unrideable!I need some advice how to get down the mountains, due to the steep grades, my legs and hands cramp to the point that I cannot stop my bike. I need my disc brakes for this

Took a couple of side trips to seek out two covered bridges (all pics on facebook), and eventually ended in Gettysburg (Artillery Ridge Campground)for the night. Going to take in some of the local sites/museums tomorrow, before hitting the road in the afternoon (weather permitting). Heading to Lancaster next, to visit my Aunt Gerry who lives in a convent. Missing my family, yet really enjoying life on the road.

Day 13

13 turned out to be a lucky number. Left Urbana in light rain this am and headed east on HWY 28. Beautiful ride, passed by berry farms and vegetable stands. Picked up HWY 40 and headed into Columbus. Hitched a ride in the van through downtown Columbus (not biker friendly) and picked up the riding again on the other side of town. Gorgeous ride through horse farms and rolling hills...and later much BIGGER hills. Felt great and averaged about 20 mph for the day. Tailwind and some wicked fast downhills helped make the ride enjoyable. After loosing some mileage due to Columbus, sailed through my original overnight destination (Hebron)and rode on to Zanesville, OH for a total of 76 miles.

Camping at Dillon State Park. Nice facilities, mountain bike & nature trails, wifi, nice showers and laundry. Best of all they make their own fudge at the camp store, yummy.

As of today, total mileage is 970. Tomorrow will shoot for West Virginia. Hope my legs are ready for the mountains!

Day 11

Summit Lake State Park to Urbana, OH

8/4/10

Great day, got in 78 miles and two ice cream cones! Humidity was ridiculous, drenched all day. Had to load up due to fog, and later held up due to to quick t-storm. Met some great people at Cavin's Meat Market, and bought some great roasted garlic cheese! Rain cooled the temp from 90+ to 71 degrees. Last 20 miles fun and fast!

Stopped at Warren's (local bike shop) for tubes, staying tonight @ the Country Hearth Motel in Urbana where we will be meeting up with Grace for a crew change. Judy and I have had a blast and she has been a better SAG HAG than I ever imagined. We have our camping, sag stops, and road communication down to a science. Hopefully she will agree to ride with Gracie tomorrow and show her the ropes.

900 miles down!

Crossed the line

8/2/10

Crossed the Indiana state line today. Boring ride along HWY 28. Corn, corn and more corn, terrain was flat and straight. Took a break in Williamsport in from of the courthouse. Met a FedEx man/local cyclist. Headed to Clarks Hill, IN to Big Fish Camping. Had the whole saltwater pool to myself! Broke all the rules by jumping in in all my cycling clothes.

Judy had an itch to see the Indianapolis Speedway so we headed south in the van to check it out. Unfortunately the museum was closed, but we took a few pics and ate at Applebee's. Late bedtime.

T-Storms in the am and a one hour time change put us at the latest start yet. Stopped in Frankfort for a rest and talked to a trucker who came over to tell us he liked what were were doing. Got in relatively late to Summit Lake State Park. We unloaded the RANS and Judy and I made up for the lost miles by cruising around the lake. Beautiful state park.

Rantoul, KS

Met a homeless man today who claimed to be the cousin of the late, great, Jim Morrison. Could happen..

Became pretty ill at mile 36 and had to rest about an hour before getting back on the road. Got in 76 miles and stayed in a campground near the old Airforce base in Rantoul, IL. Met a nice couple from Kansas (Topeka/Salina) who where camping next to us, they gave us a $5 donation and we had a nice visit. Ate some horrible pizza and called it a day.

I'm not from Havana

7/31/10
Staying tonight at the bustling Evening Star Campground on HWY 136 between Havana and San Jose, IL. This is by far the craziest campground Judy & I have ever experienced. The grounds are crawling with happy, half-naked kids, dogs of every breed, and unconscionable number of golf carts. Adding to these festivities is a wedding and reception (we were invited to the dance tonight) a deafening civil war, toilet paper shooting cannon, and some of the oddest characters we’ve encountered (think something along the lines of a David Byrne movie) . Tomorrow heading for Rantoul, IL along HWY 136.

Catching up in Urbana, OH

7/31/10
Great evening in Camp Point. IL last night! Stayed at the Victorian Inn (what we discovered later to be an ex-funeral home) had a great dinner of catfish, German potato salad (served hot & sweet) and a couple of lime beers at Hard Times II. Bartender/waitress was very personable and service/food was excellent. Met some folks from NJ, who, by the way did not know the capital of their own state, and discussed “how the hell we I was going to ride through Pennsylvania.” Went back to Inn to watch Forrest Gump and get ready for the next morning.

Today was a great 90 mile day. The morning started off with a stop @ Casey’s where the woman (behind the counter (Mary) donated two bags of ice, then reached into her purse for a $20 donation. Incredible. Got some great directions for alt. route and hit the back country roads. Another stop @ Astoria prompted a woman (Hope Lock) to jump out of her car and hand us a five dollar bill, tell us how Alzheimer’s has affected her family and wish us good luck.
Somewhere out on HWY 136 just at the 89 mile mark, my front blinker along with a piece of my bar bag hit the pavement and was lost to the pavement. We doubled back but were unable to retrieve them. Sorry Ron, that was your light..

Day 7

Got in about 70 miles today. Had a wonderful ride this morning on country paved roads, rolling countryside, farms, creeks, and huge trees. Had to jump in the van to get across the bridge and cross the Mississippi. Took long lunch break in Washington Park in Quincy, IL and caught up on the local history (Lincoln/Douglas Debates). Left Ron in the park where his family was picking him up to continue their vacation. Lone rider now...

Flatted on some glass outside Quincy and Judy and I were able to practice our pit skills. Fast change then back on the road.

Disappointed to learn Camp Pt., IL does not have a campground!? Staying tonight @ the Victorian Inn (small cottage out back). Owners were nice enough to take us in with 20 mins notice and we have both internet AND T.V. Also stopped at a private home with a huge garden and purchased some fresh veggies.

75 or so miles tomorrow heading somewhere between Topeka and San Jose, IL.

So glad Judy has my back as HWY 24 is two lane, without a shoulder.

Donation Update!

Today donations reached $1570. Again, please feel free to repost, share, email, or gossip about this event. I very much want to meet my fundraising goal.

Last night camped @ Pershing State Park, near the home of General John Pershing. Raccoons depleted our trailmix reserve during the night, but Judy & I never heard a sound. Ron got up and caught one critter just about to make off with my vitamin stash. Camping tonight @ Shelbina Lake.

Having to re-plot our route as 36 shoulder is questionable to HWY 24.

Catching up!

Sitting in the beautiful Carnegie Public Library in Shelbina, MO. Short day so far (45 miles), but plan make up the 12 miles after we set up camp. Lost shoulder near Clarence, and were forced to load up through the road construction.

Now to get caught up on my blogging.

7/24/10

Left Russell, KS @ 5:30 am for a century ride to Abilene, KS. Cool morning helped with our 18 mph average. Ron Leiker will be riding with me until Friday and I am glad for the company. Jim Lemmen helped us out with a much needed SAG stop in Brookville, with bananas, water, ice, Cliff bars and electrolytes. It’s great how bikers support each other.
Met Jerry Brick in Salina, KS and rode into Abilene together. Lisa and Jerry were our overnight hosts where they not only offered their hospitality, but Lisa cooked us breakfast! We met up with Brent and Stacy, ate some Mexican food and were entertained with the story of their crash on the tandem. No serious injuries, but Stacy was proud to show off her road rash
100 miles and one day down.

7/25/10

Rode out HWY 15 North of Abilene with Ron, Jerry & Brent. Riding with friends makes the day go fast. Visited and had some fun along the route. Judy VonFeldt (our awesome SAG HAG) caught up with us in the support van in Clay Center for lunch at the local restaurant. Several miles before and after the town of Linn, the county sheared off the road in what we can only speculate is in preparation for a new bed. I now do not need to wonder what it may feel like to operate a jack hammer. The jarring on two wheels felt like it could loosen all my fillings.
Made it to Washington, KS about 67 miles and camped in their lovely town park. Nice pool, playground, and showers. Stacey picked up Brent and Jerry to take back to Abilene.
Met some lovely folks in the campground from Reading, CA. Anita and Bruce were kind and let us use their two day old camper to wash our dinner dishes. Discussed NYC, musical theatre, their daughter in the military among other topics. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit!

7/26 (see previous blog entry)

7/27/10

BTW, RE: Yesterday, 7/26/10, I mislabeled the county on my last blog entry (I was a bit exhausted and should NOT have been blogging) Marshal County was where the Sprinter (now known as Mr. Mojo Risin) was pulled over due to motorist complaints.

Today started out of Hiawatha, KS on Hwy 35. Beautiful cool early morning to the Missouri River, Judy called in a favor, and just when we were loading into the van, we heard the KC Country radio station announce our event on the air. DJ gave our location and the website, plus a blurb about our cause. Awesome motivator!

Monday, July 26, 2010

Day 3

Washington, KS to Hiawatha, KS. 85 miles of hot pavement. Motivational music: Fat Bottom Girls by Queen. Rode strong despite the heat, total mileage for trip around 260. Could REALLLLLY use a massage. Neck and shoulders burning.....
No camping facilities in Hiawatha, so opted for the local motel. No digital coverage on cell, but will upload pics to Facebook soon.
Pulled over by Dickerson County sheriff about 20 miles west of Seneca, due to motorist complaints. We checked out legal, but were asked to pull over for traffic. We were, but apparently people called us in anyway.
For some unknown reason, the twitter feed on this blog went down. Here is the direct link:

http://twitter.com/erenard

Tomorrow crossing the Missouri river, not sure if we are able to do so, but will give it a try.

Van is loaded up and we're ready to leave @ 5am tomorrow morning. Doing a century from Russell to Abilene, KS. Ron Leiker is riding with me and Jerry Brick will meet us on route. Temps are forecast for mid 90's and hoping for a SW wind.

Hard to believe almost a year planning has gone into this trip. Here we go!

Sweeeet!

Lonnie Claycamp with Insurance Planning came through and saved this ride! Now the support vechicle has full coverage and we're ready to roll Saturday morning.

Bernadette Franks owner of Sunflower Massage Therapy donated my massage & Chinese oil to the cause today. She does an awesome job! Wish she could come along for the entire ride.

So grateful for all the support and phone calls I've received in the last few days. Now I need your help getting the word out and getting the donations up! As of today, we're up to $1350. I'm hoping in the next 22 days I can reach or exceed my fundraising goal.

Feel free to share this blog on your Facebook via the share button, or email the website to your friends and co-workers. Nearly every person I talk with knows someone affected by this debilitating disease. My hope is to inspire others to go out there and make a difference.

Let's do this!!

2 Days...

Yesterday RANS came through with a generous sponsorship and the use of a new Crank Forward Alterra. Thanks to Randy Schlitter for his support!

So much to do before we leave, and consequently not much time for riding. Hit the chiropractor a couple of times, and hopefully can get in with the massage therapist.

Hartford Insurance dropped the coverage on the support van and gave me 30 days to find another company. DISLIKE!!

6 days!!

Only 6 days until I hit the road and begin this adventure. I'm homesick already, but am sure will feel fine once I start riding every day. This will be as much of a mental/emotional challenge as a physical one. For one, I've never left my dog for more than a week!

Just kidding, of course I will miss my family, but looking forward to seeing them at the end of the ride. Now that's motivation!

Ron and Doug put the hitch on the Sprinter Thurs night, so now we have a bike rack. Spoke to Randy Schlitter of RANS Corporation and he said he would lend me a backup bicycle and donate some cash. Never know who'll you'll run into in the grocery store!

Rob Jones helped negotiate the purchase of Boulevard Brewery's's donation of a beer party and turned it into cash with the help of Paceline, Inc. Way to go!!!

Heading out for a training ride in the early am. Temps here have been in the 100's all week....oppressive.

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Donation Update!

Today's donations are up to $1250. Please forward this blog to anyone you know who has been affected by Alzheimer's or would just like to support a fellow cyclist.

Heading out for another training ride. Lots of details to take care of before we leave.

Perfect Print of Russell did an excellent job designing and applying the vinyl graphics on van today. Thanks for all your hard work. In addition, Perfect Print has agreed to donate 1/2 the cost!

Klema's Apple Market of Russell contributed $ for the ride. Thanks John Birke!!

Today's Alzheimer's donations total $1055, a little over half-way. Please tell your friends, friends and co-workers about this ride and encourage them to donate. Even small donations add up.

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Donations today total $1005! Keep it coming!

The vinyl graphics go on the support van Thursday and Perfect Print of Russell has agreed to donated 1/2 the cost. Thank you Kaylynn!

Just heard from Boulevard Brewing Company who have agreed to provide 4 cases of their beer to be auctioned off, with proceeds to go towards ride expenses. Must be able to pick-up in Kansas City, more details to come.

Many last minute details to be ironed out, but the suspense is building as I get nearer to the go date!

Please forward a link to this site to anyone you know who might be interested in sponsoring or donating directly to ALZStars.

Thanks!

Biking Across Kansas

Just back from BAK 2010. What a blast. Got in over 550 miles and feel great. Picked up many bits of useful information regarding hydration, nutrition and muscle healing during the 8 day camp on wheels. Donations are up to $905! Just got a new sponsor this week. Nex-Tech has stepped up to the plate! A BIG thank you to Valerie Rule, Justin, and all the folks at Nex-Tech.

Came home to a box of goodies from Paceline Products. Two tires, lots of chamois butter, t-shirt, water bottle, and FRS. Thanks to Rob Jones for initiating the Paceline Products sponsorship!

Now the goal is to try to keep up some level of fitness I have built up over the last 8 days. Only about 4 weeks until the start of my ride....

Donation Update!

As of this morning, I am a bit closer to my $2000 goal. $375 has been raised thus far!

Our local newspaper, the Hays Daily News, will publish a story on my ride next week. Hopefully, this will bring in a few corporate sponsors to help with expenses. I will post a link to the story as soon as it is available.

Progress is being made on the support van. Kevin and Dad called this am to report the insulation and lining were going in today and the inverter and battery were purchased. Tomorrow, they will head to Grand Junction to pick up a Fan-tastic Fan to help cool the interior of the van. I am so appreciative of their help.

Van Update

Kevin Bogan (Brother) and Joe Bogan (Dad) have generously offered to start the much needed work on the support van. Doug Renard (Hubby) took the ramp out last night before its trip to Colorado on Sunday. Here are some "before" pics. Can't wait to see the finished version!

Ride is coming together!

The excitement is building toward this summers cross country ride! Volunteer drivers Judy Vonfeldt and Grace Blehm have signed up to head up the SAG vehicle and manage the daily operations of the ride. Still many details to work out...

Coffee Rules of Hays, KS has stepped up to help sponsor the ride, and private donations are beginning to come in on the donation page. Still need corporate sponsors to help with the expenses (gas, meals, campsite fees, etc.)Suggested corporate sponsorship is $500 and includes sizable add on side of SAG vehicle and in all publicity material.

Work on the SAG vehicle is going slow. Looking at purchasing 4 new tires, tune-up/oil change, insulating and wiring to outlets and lights. Also looking at adding a hidden hitch for exterior bike rack.

$300 toward my $2000 goal! All funds go directly to the National Alzheimer's Association. Please contact me direct if you are interested in a sponsorship!

New Donation Link!

Here is my new donation link. Within 1 hour of creating, emailing, and facebooking I raised $100! As you may know my goal this summer is to raise $2000 for Alzheimer's research as I pedal my way to my family reunion in NJ. Can't wait to get started!

Sprinter Sag Wagon!

My hubby and I bought (much to the dismay of our 17y/o car-less son) a 2002 Sprinter cargo van to use as our SAG wagon for the Alzheimer's X-country Ride.

We have a lot of upgrades to get finished before July! Some upgrades include: new tires, insulating interior, wiring(110v), installing air conditioner, beds, and overhead storage for all our junk. The van will seat two and carry all the necessary gear for riders. Hoping to get some simple appliances installed (ex, induction cook-top/ travel fridge)

Plan on getting some corporate sponsors to help finance the trip, then all donations can go directly to the National Alzheimer's Association. Will be selling ad space on Sprinter as well as advertising our website for donations.

Hoping to get some local publicity along the way to get the website out there and get those donations rolling in!

Will post Sprinter before and after pictures as they develop!
